If you accept that there are witches in their universe, and that these witches have working spells, then it is believable that these spells could alter the personality of their target. Heck, I have seen people throw wrenches in other people's relationship and make other people act "out of character" even without magic! :-) I believe that is the point of this particular chapter: to show that Triptych’s witches are messing with them to try and pry them apart.
