Deleted scene: chapter 9 part 9, Shane’s POV

Editor’s note: This is Nancy’s first draft of the end of chapter 9 part 9 from Shane’s point of view (POV).

“A pleasant surprise?” Harris’ words rang in Shane’s head after she stalked away. It hadn’t occurred to him that that could have been the woman’s intention. Because that would mean… He couldn’t finish the thought because no answer made sense. Harris had stabbed him in the back. Why would she do anything pleasant for him that didn’t involve Jake?

Daddy, Mommy’s not mad at you anymore. His son’s thought brought Shane out of his reverie. He looked up to see Jake peeking around the corner from the hall.

Suddenly Shane’s anger melted away. Weariness replaced it. Thanks, buddy. The boy flashed him a smile, then ducked into the hall. Presuming it was due to Harris’ return Shane grabbed for his alien side. He’d just managed to cloak himself in it when she did.

Harris strode up to him, offering another microchip on her upturned palm. This will unencrypt the other one. The password is 03dEc09.

After a moment’s hesitation Shane took the microchip. He’s expected another trick or condition from Harris, but she didn’t offer any. Even stranger was her tone of voice. It almost sounded like his when he was in the void. Nevertheless that and the oddly familiar-sounding password could be pondered later. “Thank you,” he said sincerely.

Harris’ reply was a brief smile that didn’t reach her eyes.

Safe in the void Shane didn’t much care. He did, however, care about the two young faces again peeking around the corner. “Good night Jake, Ashlynn.” He was out the door moments after their replies.

Boy, is he ever dense! *Slap, slap* Wake up, Suzie!

He seriously needs to sit down and use this brain he’s so proud of.

Thanks for the insight into his “denseness”! 😀
