On to a new chapter! Chapter 9, "Détente," kicks off with this:

Addison hesitated outside of Myers' quarters. She didn't want to see the prat. Speaking with him resulted in an argument more often than not, and the arguments upset Jake. But Jake's well-being spurred her to press the door chime.

A full minute later Addison felt Myers' mind touch hers. She'd expected the fleeting contact, which conveyed his annoyance and worry before he retreated.

The door slid open, revealing a barefoot Myers standing with his arms crossed. Although his T-shirt and sweatpants still hung on him, he looked much better than he had when he'd picked up Jake from her quarters two weeks ago. Healthier.

Resisting the urge to wrap her arms around him, Addison shoved her hands in the back pockets of her jeans. "I'm not here to take Jake. He's enjoying being with you after you were... apart. But I need to talk to you."

So chapter 9 will be called "Détente". I like the fact that you picked up a French word for you

Hey Romain! I was wondering if you were lurking. :)

Yeah, I took three years of French in high school. I can't speak it, but remember some of it. Your English is much better than my French!

Here's the start of chapter 9, part 2:

Addison hesitated a few steps from Myers' door. The prat hadn't ogled her once, which left her disappointed. Her reaction and the fact that she hadn't wanted to leave just plain pissed her off.

Turning to face the door, Addison considered what she'd do if she teleported past it. She'd likely catch Myers off-guard, so she'd pin him telekinetically. Then she'd beat at his bloody alien shields until she broke through. From there the ways to take advantage were endless.

Chapter 9 part 4 starts off decidedly rated G. :)

The evening had been all Jake's. The tyke had earned it with Shane all but living at the lab while Harris searched for the thief's identity. He and Jake had gone to the zoo, had cheeseburgers and fries for dinner, ice cream for dessert, then burned off a few of those calories playing basketball.

Comfortable on the couch with his son's warm body sprawled in his lap, Shane nearly fell asleep along with Jake. His son had stayed awake for the first half of "The Emperor's New Groove" before sleep claimed him. Shane gratefully switched off the TV and DVR with a thought. However funny and entertaining he found the movie, the twentieth viewing was pushing his limits.

Shane picked up the two year-old and carried him into his bedroom. Thankfully he'd thought to have Jake brush his teeth and change into his favorite fire engine pajamas before starting the movie.

Jake didn't quite wake up when Shane tucked him into bed. Sleep well, buddy.

"Uh-huh," Jake murmured. 'Night, Daddy.

Part 8 of chapter 9 begins thusly:

The weekend after Shane had had his way with Harris was his most productive since Jake was born. His son, Lynn, and the Brit bitch went on a mini-vacation. Even though he was supposed to have Jake for the weekend, Shane had agreed because Jake wanted to go. "We're gonna see the Galapagrows!" he'd crowed, jumping up and down.

Shane couldn't say no to that sort of enthusiasm. "Okay, short stuff. If that's what you want."

"Yes!" Jake exclaimed, pumping his tiny fist. Then some of his happiness evaporated. "I wish you could come too, Daddy."

Shane carefully shielded his bitterness as he replied. "It's okay, Jake. You'll tell me all about it, right?"

Jake's curls bounced wildly from his nod. "Yep!"

With Jake away splashing in the ocean, Shane dove headfirst into his work. That and a few hours at the dojo were the only things that could keep his mind off of how he'd have to grovel at the bitch's feet to get the encryption key.

How's this for a sneak peek? Ch 9 part 9 is up hours early due to a post-scheduling bug in WordPress. Ring in 2010 with some bad behavior! :)

Long time, no sneak peek. I'll ease back in with a tiny one. Chapter 11, which debuts Friday, is titled "The Parent Trap."
