I'd like to learn more about the crystal thing Shane has. Where did he get it from, why does he need it etc?

Somewhere in chapter 6 Shane said that his father left the crystal for him. As for why he needs it... hmm... fodder for a bonus story, perhaps.

I remember it being from his father. I am just curious why he needs it. Couldn't he use his powers without it? And does that mean that Jacob won't be able to use his alien side until Shane passes on the crystal? etc

So, I'm curious what Triptych logo would look like? Is that just me? Do they have commercials for their "mainstream" sections? Or are they like some of our Mega corps that would rather we didn't even know their names so they can get away with more stuff?

Shane can use his abilities without the prism. It's pretty much an amplifier. That's why he couldn't telepathically communicate with Addison from far away without using the crystal. I'd say his max range for telepathy without the prism is 50 ft.
As for healing, Shane couldn't complete major tasks like mending injured internal organs without the crystal. It's too energy intensive and needs to be done quickly. He could, say, heal a broken bone without the aid of his prism, but it would take days.
Once Jake learns how to use his abilities, he'll be able to use them under the same rules. Maybe he and his dad will fight over whose turn it is to have the crystal for the day. ;)

Oooh! Then he could make a necklace out of them and make the Alpha facility EXPLODE! :)
(I shall neither confirm nor deny prism manufacturing possibilities.)
